Memory Aids for you from me - Installment 1

I'm not from here, and I'm a Polyglot, so things tend to confuse me. As such, I thought I'd offer you my services to help you as well. If you have things that confuse you like the ones below, let me know what they are, and I'll be sure to come up with a little memory aid for you too.

(Yes, contrary to many rumors, I'm that nice of a guy!)

Right Wing and Left Wing; which one is which?
Republican and Right both start with R.
= > So Democrats are Left wingers.
(just made this one up today after Buzz sent me a story about fuel efficient homes of high ranking politicians.)

Port is left.
Starboard is Right
= > Port is 4 letters just like Left.
(I worked on a sail boat in college and came up with this one REAL quick!)

Pull is towards you
Push is away from you
=> Push and Shove both have SH
(i had big problems with push and pull until I came up with this little aid)

You are all more than welcome.

I'm going to pile on here...I had never noticed it until a couple months ago, but airplanes have a red light on one wing and a green light on the other (don't ask me how it escaped my notice, it just did). The red light is the port side of the plane, the green is starboard. How I remember this is that port wine is red--unless it's a tawny port, but let's keep it simple, shall we?

Thanks for the memory joggers! :)

When I used to sail on the intercoastal waterway you had to stay inside the markers or run into shallow water FAST. On one side was a red marker and on the other was green. Sometimes they would be out of sight of one another so the way you knew you were inside the lines was by following the rule "red right returning."

A Navy sub-contractor once gave me this advice. He said [pretend to] point to a star to remember which side is starboard. I'm right handed, so I point with my right hand.
