A friend just emailed me this:
Yesterday, Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia) set the world record in the marathon at 2 hours and 4 minutes at the Berlin Marathon. I'm not sure how best to convey how incredibly fast that is.
It's running an 18 second 100 meters (and that's faster than you think) four hundred and twenty one times in a row.
It's running a mile in 4:45, 26 times in a row.
Or, try it this way: get on a treadmill, set it to the highest speed it will go, which is usually 10mph, and think about doing that for two hours. Now consider that you're still going almost three miles per hour (30% !) slower than Gebreselassie's 12.7mph pace.
To put that into my personal perspective. I ran a track workout last week…
5 sets of 1000 meters at ½ marathon pace (6:40/mile),
Then 4 sets of 200 meters “fast”. My 200’s were between 33-37 seconds…
This guy ran a marathon at my FAST pace as 18 second 100s is 36 seconds 200s!!!
Hahahaah I don’t think I could run 2 laps around the track at that pace!
