Micrathene Whitneyi

Kerry, Karma and I saw an owl exactly like this one this morning as we were walking back to our cars from our trail run. Only about 5-6 inches tall. He was just chillin' on a branch above us about 5 feet away. So cool!

From doing a little research it turns out he's known as an Elf Owl, and only lives in Texas for a few months, spending most of his year in Mexico. He eats insects and lizards, but has also been known to catch small birds or small snakes. They're great in flight, and cath most of their prey while in the air.
Read more about the ELF OWL here.

Trail run was good too. Plenty of spider webs, water in the creek, about 4 miles.
