Saturday's 21 miles

Today's run was good. We went 21 miles across some of the hillier streets in town.
We took on north bound Balcones from 35th to 2222, and then Hart Lane up to Far West during miles 5 to 9. I love when they throw in some hard hills, and I love taking them hard even more.

Here are our mile splits during these very hilly miles:
5. 7:50
6. 7:57
7. 7:44
8. 7:45
9. 7:45

Pretty friggin' good eh!?!?

I had quite a bit going on in my head from my non-running life. It's quite amazing how different runs can be depending on how other things are affecting you.

Overall we ended up running about 7:45's almost all the way through. I picked up the pace to closer to a 7mile/mile at mile 18, but only held it for 2 miles as I was mentally drained, and my hamstring felt a little tender, which led to me not breathing properly and yet another side stitch.

The hamstring is certainly not an injury, but a little tender as this is the first week of transition from just running long runs to running speed workouts and hard hill repeats. In a few weeks, my legs will feel just fine with the new change, but until then, i'll err on the side of caution to make sure the hammie is just tender, and not anything else.

Good job! You never answered my question about anaerobic breathing on hills, though. Or does that just not happen to you?

yeah so about the anaerobic thing... I'm glad you re-asked!

i discussed it with Ken during my run yesterday, as i wasn't quite sure how to answer your question.
personally, it hurts but i just keep running, it burns but i just keep running, it stings and my legs feel like they're about to fall off, but i push even harder. breathing wise, when i run up a hill at moderate pace, i just keep my breating normal, and don't really have issues. when i pick up the pace to pull away, i switch to this "train" / "i'm in labor" type of breathing, out out innnn, out out innnn, out out innnn... it's pretty loud! So I do that and haven't had issues breathing. This exxagerated breathing also helps push the pace as it kinda goes hand in hand with the foot steps. I actually switch to this train/labor breathing when i do hard track workouts too. anything over 5K pace, gets this breathing.
Ken's opinion is that we do go into anaerobic, but we just keep pushing.
something weird happens to my legs when i climb. I run hard hard hard, and they literally burn real bad. To the point where you're like, i literally can't go anymore. But i know that if I gut it out, my legs go into this 'trance' like thing where they're beyond the burn, kind of anesthesized and i can keep running and find an even higher gear. this usually happens on the big big climbs like mt bonnell, but when i run hard hills, it sometimes happens then too.
hills suck, but i love the challenge. I also have all these mind things i do, which may help.
Anyway, I know, way too much information, but that's my answer!
(i'm glad you reminded me, because i forgot to get back to your question after i discussed it with ken. (had a busy day yesterday)

Thanks! I would be interested in the mind games. I think that because I literally collapsed during a hill run about 5 years ago (something I don't talk about much) that I get sort of freaked out with hills, so in addition to it being difficult & anaerobic, I also panic. I know that I have to be completely ready mentally to do well with hills, and that's about 50/50.
