16 miles of goodness

Finally had what I would call a “GOOD RUN”. Lately, I’ve been feeling a little sluggish, and even though I haven’t let up, it just hasn’t felt “good”, and I’ve felt like I’m behind everyone else (or at least a certain few) on fitness.

But today this all changed. I have doubts that more than 3 of us had real plans to go for 16 miles today. I know Kristen was going 16, and Steve was going 16, based on last night’s talk, but I think everyone else was planning on 14. Kristen inspired me to call out some of the other usual suspects by telling them to “man up”, and it seems to have worked. In addition, several others than run at a slightly slower pace ran 16 too! Everyone seems to have picked up the long run paces by 15-30 seconds per mile!

There were 15 of us in our clump for quite some time, and once the 12 and 14 mile turnoffs had happened there were still 10 of us going for 16miles! Last season, it used to just be myself and Ken going longest with maybe a guest or 2 more during some of the runs. I’m speechless!

Ok, enough of that. We ended up going 16, and apart from feeling like a washed up, dirty and wet towel for thee first 45 mintues or so, eventually, my legs felt completely fresh and I loved every minute after. I did feel some fatigue with under a mile to go, but I think it’s just mental as you’re close to done, and get that Barn Sour* feeling. I could have easily gone 24 or longer this morning at the paces we were going.

GPS watch wearing cohorts suggest we averaged right around a 7:30min/mile pace. I know the first 4 or so were no faster than 7:45, which means that we picked it up well into the low 7’s for many miles.

Just under 28 miles for the week in two days…. That’s good stuff!

Happy Running!
