My fitness and my legs were there for a sub 3. I have no doubt about
that.
Thanks to all support. I kept thinking of you all as I went into the
"mental gutter" to bring me back out. Almost got a little too
emotional after the last hill at mile 21 ish.
So what happenned? Ill obviously will obviously write more later but
here's my early observations.
Perfect 5 miles split, 10km split and exactly on the money at the half.
My quads were beat but normal beat, however, aiound 18 I think, I got
a spasm on the left calf. I immediately popped more electrolytes, but
the calf issues kept returning. I'll have to look at entire splits but
come mile 23 I really thought I'd get a sub 3.
About 200 yards later, both calves got really mad at me, and when I
got to mile 24, I as far as i could tell I would have had to make up
about 30 seconds over last 2.2 to get a 2:59:59. Easy... I can do that
on any other day. I have the heart to fight for it. However, the
calves were on the verge of full cramp lockdown and there was no way.
The 3:03:06 could easily have been a 3:18:06 if I had pushed it. Need
to take a closer look at the entire thing, but here are my watch
splits for 25 and 26.
M25- goal 6:50 actual 7:31
M26+0.2 goal 8:02 actual 9:41
That's 2:20 too much. Not good.
5 Minutes and 6 second Personal Record improvement on a tough course.
HELL YEAH!! I'll take that.
It was a head wind for the last 8 miles or so, but it did not play a
factor in slowing me down. Calves. Stupid calves!!
Ok, ice bath and quick nap. Then any food I want and beer.

Awesome job out there Mike! For those of us tracking it was obvious you were fighting for it and putting in the Rogue spirit. Real inspiring and something I'll be remembering when I hit the 18 mile gutter next Saturday. Now enjoy the ice, food, and beer. You've more than earned it.
Right on Mike. Congrats on the PR, on a tough course.
Sorry to hear the calves gave you some issues, but you fought through it, made some good decisions, when good decisions are tough to make.
You are always doing Rogue proud. Congrats, enjoy it, you deserve it. Enjoy all the beer and food you want.
A PR at Boston, that's awesome! I don't think it'll last long though, you'll go sub three soon.
Mike = badass!
Nice job mike I kinda wondered what happened to me too. That was the biggest mental and physical effort I think I have ever made. My legs are repeatedly telling me today that I worked them way too hard. Kirsten
