Holiday training

Thursday Dec 24 - got in a very easy paced 10 miles.

Friday dec 25 - my favorite run in a very long time! My Christmas
present for Karma, a fun 5 mile trail run. He loved it as not only
did Nedra and Muz join in, but Steve and Ruth came out with their two
doggiea Bala and Cadence, so Karma was extra pepped up trying to keep
up with the 1 year old over-energized Cade! You could literally see
him smiling all the way!

Saturday Dec 26 - very few people came out for our 20 mile run, but
that didn't stop us. Muz, Niccole, Dan and I ran about a 7:45 pace
for the first half then, since the return trip was net-downhill, the
pace automagically picked up to 7:30 then a tad faster after that.

I used this run as my final test "long run" where I wore all my
Bandera race gear - camelback with 2 liters of water, and 1 water
bottle. I also tested out some of my nutrition and hydration
startegies for the race and everything got a passing grade. Yes,
running up Duval with a full pack on your back at 7:40 pace is quite
unpleasant, but it worked fine. Just felt like I was spending the
energy equivalent of running a minute faster per mile. Yes, I got a
little "gag reflex" from eating potatoes and pizza at those faster
paces but nothing wanted to come back up. Yes, adding red bull at the
half way point also worked well.

So now I have 2 hydration options, and 6 different nutrition options
to choose from which I'm quite excited about since eating, or rather
"fueling" and "keeping your stomach happy" is an adventure in itself,
when running for 62 long miles. Afterall, you absolutely HAVE TO keep
packing in the calories if you're going to finish with all your
faculties.

And most importantly, there's beer to be had at the finish and can't
waste any precious beer time recovering and eating!

Are you carrying a 2 liter pack and a water bottle? Don't you think that's a bit much?
