Sebastian Coe and Russ Secker

I'm sitting here on the plane heading towards our layover in New York and just finished reading the first part of my friend Russ Secker's book, "Running Across Countries". The part I've read so far was his first cross-country multistage Ultra, the Transgaulle. An 18 stage, 18 day race across France where the daily distance was 35-50'ish miles.

Some of you know him, some of you may have read last summer when I visited him while he ran across Europe. He's an amazing athlete, yet so humble about his staggering accomplishments.

Him running with battered knees, stress fractures (unknown at the time), severly swollen shins and ankles, etc., really makes my aches and pains completely insignificant in comparison.
The book is full of great quotes, and as I sit here (wishing my hip, IT band, quad and knee would just give me a freakin' break for the rest of the time I sit in the flying can of sardines), I read this quote that stopped me from reading on.

"The great thing about athletics is that it's like poker, sometimes you know what's in your hand and it may be a load of rubbish, but you've got to keep up the front." British Miler, Sebastian Coe
