Questions about the GREAT GREENMONSTER-OFF

A few different people have asked me some questions.  The three most re-occuring ones are:

Three clarification questions.
1. What size is considered 1 drink?
2. Does it begin on January 1st, or has it already started?
3. Does it need to be the original (virgin) Green Monster recipe, or  do the variations count as well?

I hope this answers any questions you may have too.

I also added some additional information JT and I got from our nutritionist (Meredith Terranova - http://www.eatingandlivinghealthy.com/) which you can choose to follow or ignore at the BOTTOM.

The main point of this challenge is to increase vegetable and good nutrient consumption in 2011.
(Yes, it started out with JT telling me he was going for 100 of them, and me blindly telling him i'd not only match it, but exceed his number not even knowing what he was talking about --> yet another "case of beer" bet was born.  We then decided it'd be fun to open it up to the masses and here we are with 38 people joining in so far!

1 - What is considered a drink?
JT and I are going with a pint glass.  If you have a different glass you feel is good enough for you, then that's fine.  (I personally don't have a case of beer riding on this with you, so a schooner or other glass will work just fine.  What ever makes you happy.)

2. Does it begin on January 1st, or has it already started?
Official count starts Jan 1.  Some people have done test drinks, but we ask everyone to officially start the count within this group at ZERO on Jan 1.  (you can keep a different count elsewhere if you started earlier)

3- Does it need to be the original (virgin) Green Monster recipe, or  do the variations count as well?
It doesn't have to be the originanl Green Monster recipe.  Obviously, the goal is to to drink something healthy, so adding buttermilk or icecream defeats the purpose.

Meredith's guidelines for JT and I, that you may or may not want to consider:
** Green apples have more nutrients than red apples.

** I asked her "what would be your recipe":
Ingredients
2.5 cups spinach (or Kale)
2 cups cucumber
1 head of celery
1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
1 bunch parsley
2 green apples
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Directions:  Combine all ingredients in a blender. This makes approximately 28-30 ounces, or 3-4 servings.

**  If there were going to be rules, they should be:
-12 oz serving minimum.
-low sugar content fruit (green apples)
-high water nutrient dense veggies (you can add or supplement with kale, too)
-no added sweetener
- needs to have more veg sources than fruit
- no dairy

Why no Dairy?
"The reason calcium (milk/dairy) is not mixed in a multi-vitamin is because it hinders the absorption of nutrients of certain vitamins.  So it is diminishing the point of even having the drink to mix in the dairy.  I will give you the apple (high sugar fruit) for your GM if you take out the dairy.  Have a glass of milk later on, well after you have the green drink!"

OBSERVATIONS & TIPS:
  • Consider making a large batch that you can drink over a few days so you don't have to repeatedly make these everyday.
  • Frozen chopped spinach (or kale) blends much easier than fresh.
  • Maybe you want to go with spinach till you figure out a good flavor you like then add kale into the mix.
  • A banana greatly enhances the flavor, but bananas are high sugar fruits. (maybe you don't want high sugar fruit in yours?)
  • Flax seeds, Sesame seeds, Chia seeds.  people are adding all sorts and other stuff too.
  • you can powder Flax and sesame or other seeds in the blender on their own.  Just don't go too long or it becomes a paste.
  • Chia seeds should not be broken down.
