“I was driving in to work this morning, you know, my usual drive North on Congress Avenue, over townlake bridge and up to the office.” “Yeah, I know which way you drive to work.” “Right, so it was probably around 6:10am, and it was pouring down rain, and this guy was out there running with his dog.” “Someone was out running in this mess?” “Yep, and I couldn’t help but splash him with water when I drove by. I bet he was pissed. I don’t understand those runners. Do they HAVE to be out there even when it’s raining?” “I don’t know, runners are idiots. Do you want half my cinnabon?” “Hell yeah!”
Email chat between two runners:
“Did you run this morning?”
“Yeah, I did. Alarm rang and 4:20am, I got up at 4:28 after one snooze and took Karma out to pee. Wind was howling and it was crisp out. I went back in and made me a bowl of cereal and turned on the weather radar. Rain coming in from everywhere. But, as there was a chance people would be meeting me, I got out to the annex by 5:25am”
“Weather looked bad when I was driving to work”
“Well, right at 5:30, it was POURING hard, and I saw some lightning. I was going to give everyone a chance to make it so I waited till 5:35am, but no one showed. I decided to venture out... shorts, gloves, cap and my rain jacket. I got lucky. Rained stopped right at 5:35am. I ran the first 5 mile loop, and there was a light misty drizzle at times, but mostly no rain what so ever. And, as there are so many trees, the only time I ever got blown around by the wind was on the Mopac Pedestrian bridge and on Congress bridge. It did start raining pretty healthy right around mile 4. I then got up on Congress bridge, and by that time was pretty soaked from the rain, but it felt good to run on cool crisp weather in some rain! Anyway, 3 cars drove by and shot up giant waves of water at me. I smiled every time. It was fun. Reminded me of sprinklers in front yards I look for on hot days! I then dried Karma off, and ran another 5 mile loop. For that loop there was hardly ANY misty drizzle, and the wind even let up.”
“Wow, I’m jealous!”
“Yeah, I had a GREAT run. Music was great, only about another 20 people out there. Temperature was fantastic, and to top it off, just like on Saturday, I took no Hammer Gels at anytime, and felt strong all the way. However, now I’m looking out the window and it looks much worse out. I guess I just got lucky!”
“yeah, you did! I’m jealous.”
“Funny thing is, I’m toasting up my waffles in the break room and got to talking with someone. Conversation led to me running 10 this morning. From the look on her face, I could tell she thinks I’m from Jupiter. Ha!”

Now I'm sad I missed it. Nah. Going back to bed at 5:10 was pretty nice. Gotta admit it!
Runners are like born-again-Christians, very committed to their passion, always self-promoting, and would most likely go insane if their passion was found to be empty.
