I was having bfast with a few friends this am, and our chat veered towards hydration and nutrition.
I mentioned a great article I had read a couple months back about Vitamin D, and how regular doctors and endurance sport doctors differ widely on their views of the daily amount of Vitamin D needed. Maybe it's the placebo effect, but I felt enough a difference to add it to my arsenal.
It talks about a woman that usually ran 6min miles, went into a rut where she felt sluggish running 8's, increased her Vitamin D intake and within months was back to rockin' out 6min/miles. Also mentions how Deena Kastor has upped her intake after her foot broke in Beijing.
Click to go to the Vitamin D article then click on it to zoom in - scroll up and down on the side.
I bought Vitamin D, (HEB brand) and 100 pills were on sale for $2.98. Brand name Vitamin D pills were close to $10 for a similar container. What a ripoff. (It's probably needless to say I bought all HEB brand boxes the store had)

Ummmm...I get all the Vit D I need for free - from the sun. All you need is 20 min a day with no sun screen. Since I almost never go outside from 10am to 4pm I avoid the intense sun that likes to burn us. If I am out then, I wear sunscreen. I don't wear sunscreen on our early morning runs or evening runs and figure I get my 20 min worth of sun then. However, those of you prone to skin cancer like Deena Kastor are wise to always wear long sleeves, hats and sun screen so Vit D would be worthwhile.
From what I understand, it's the much more prevalent use of sunscreen etc that has led to the discovery of low Vit D levels in some people.
