Yesterday was the third time I ordered by not ordering and I'm really taking a liking to it.
Anyone who knows me, knows my issues with Menus. I just can't read a menu as they overwhelm me and I can't focus, so I've taken to a new eating sport I call Mystery Meals.
The concept is simple. Remember back in the day when you mom would have dinner ready and you'd just enjoy whatever mom had cooked up. That's it in a nutshell.
First time was at Zen, Japanese Food. I was tired of getting the same thing, so I simply told the lady at the ordering counter to pick something for me. She got excited and asked if she could go off the menu and with her personal invention. "sure, surprise me!". It was very good, albeit a little too spicy, but I did tell her I was fine with spicy so I can't complain.
The second time was at the Black Sheep Lodge a few weeks ago. Didn't want my regular burger I get there, so I asked the waitress if she had 3 or 4 favorites. Of course she did, so i told her to choose one for me, just not a burger. Mmmm... A delicious pulled pork sandwich was my dinner.
Third time was yeterday at lunch at Hyde Park Grill; but the slight twist this time was that my friend opted to order for me while I went to the bathroom when the wiatress showed up. A few rules were set: no salad(much too hungry for a salad), no cauliflower, brusselsprouts or liver. She did awesome and yet again I got something I hadn't had in years: meatloaf, green beans and mashed potatoes. She knew I liked mashers over their weird fries so she got me mashed potatoes, which was kind of a semi cheat, I guess. But that was based on her knowing my "side" of choice at HPG.
I'm gonna keep doing this quite often when I don't want my regular dish or if I haven't ever been somewhere. Afterall, if you can't trust your friends or a waiter/waitress that eats there everyday, then you should stay home alone.
So if I'm ever out to lunch or dinner with you, feel free to ask if I'm up for a Mystery Meal. Chances are, unless I have something specific already planned, the answer will be a resounding "YES!"

Hyde Park fries rock!
An old friend of mine does that EVERY time he's at a restaurant. Asks them to choose for him. He's never been disappointed. Sounds fun!
letting go of control? hmmm....I'm scared to try this. but good idea.
What? No brusselsprouts or liver!?! wtf! That's so unAmerican, er, UnEnglish.
Ha, sounds fun, "surprise me"!
