night trail run

I joined my friend Meredith for her final night (darkness) run before her Western States 100 race ina couple of weeks.  The objective was to run at night to finalize lighting strategy, so we met at 9pm and ran for 9 miles on the trails.
Quite an eventful evening, and it was great fun.  Highlights included:

  • LOUD, and i mean LOUD amazon rainforst like sounds dee in the darkness by all the crickets???  wow, it was eerily loud!
  • Two Giant Spider attacks.  Both got stuck on me after i ran through their web. One was so big and landed on my head, that when i wiped my head with my hand, i honestly felt like i had a small branch stuck in my hair and it wouldn't come off.  5-7 seconds later, the monster was dangling off my head down by my arm.  talk about screaming like a little girl.   ugh!  I hate spiders.
  • Crawfish in the creek crossing.  They were curious and didn't leave the light as we beamed our headlamps at them.  One was a little fesity and apparently went after my leg as i passed trying to clamp at me with it's claws.
  • More smaller spiders and tons of spiderwebs.
  • Wonderful ice.
  • and my IT band flared up pretty bad which slowed things down considerably.

One more thing... why are people(a couple) dressed in regular clothes walking around the greenbelt with no flashlight at 10pm.  They were surely up to no good, but they were friendly and very surprised when we ran up on them!

10 morning miles, 9 night miles.  19 mile Tuesday.

I like eventful runs well not the part where spiders would hang on... Oh most fish are attracted to light at ,night thats why cheaters go out with lights at night in small boats and just scoop them from the sea...

I am going to have to steal this post!! Perfect write up of the evening. Thank you, again, for it. My ears are still ringing from those loud bugs.
