While the first half showed quite a bit or rust, we have to remember that it is a complete overhaul of all coaching staff, and play books. For those of you who didn't notice, we had a ton of freshman playing in the game, which also will lead to uncertainties.
I for one am very happy with the performance. The second half saw great adjustments by both sides of the ball. GG adjusted well and started throwing the ball considerably better after first half rust wore off, seeing the shoelace throws come to an end. Malcolm Brown showed us our new power running game, and our defense overwhelmed Rice in the second half.
In the postgame interviews, OC Harsin was happy, but was very clear that we have tons to improve upon. It was pretty obvious that they tried to run a vanilla offense to attempt to keep as much as possible off the field for our bigger opponents down the road.
DC Manny Diaz pretty much said the same thing. Also, paraphrasing him in the interview he said "We are a body blow team, not a knockout team. Our identity this year is body blows. We want to grind them down. The whole team is excited to be a grinding team that will keep giving body blows an wear the opponent down. This is why it is critical and necessary that we have as many substitutions as we did."
Keep that in mind as you look for "63-9" wins, because that's not what we are about this year. At least not yet, but we are headed in the right direction!
Funny part of the night came when the Rice Band, known as the mob, ridiculed the $EC, A&M and Perry with short sketches. (Below is a photo I found on the web of the $EC they made on the field.)
